Malta teat for Mendip quartet
WITH teams competing from ltaly Germany
Cyprus, England and the host country Malta, the four
man Squad from Mendip Cycling Club were in for a
tough time in the Tour of Malta stage race.
Douglas Bell, Iain Hounsell, Gary Fouracre and
Dave Russell had been preparing solidly for the last
six months for an event that covered 180 miles over
five stages in four days, and, considering the high
quality of the other teams, produced a set of results
that reflected the enormous effort they put in.
Hard, fast stages every day, sometimes on tenable
roads, took their toll on the 75 starters, with 25 dropping out before the end of the race. The Mendip
quartet rode well as a team as well as individually,
with Russell recording fourth place on three stages.
He was cruelly robbed of a top three overall position
after he punctured twice on the second day, losing
over seven minutes on the leaders.
Gary excelled himself and grew stronger every
day, revelling in the hills and finished. in the top 15
each stage, and both he and Dave impressed the other
riders with their aggressive riding.
Iain and Dougie solidly backed their team-mates,
both making breaks off the front on the stages trying
to thin out the main bunch. Dougie suffered the first
crash of the Tour when he fell off on the first day, a
badly grazing his leg and elbow, but once patched up
he completed the event. `
Final overall positions were - Gary Fouracre;
(12th), Dave Russell (15th), Iain Hounsell (25th) and
Dougie Bell (37th)
