Brook just the best
Clive Brooks (Polytechnic CC) was in
superb form last Saturday afternoon when
he won the Yeovil CC 10 mile time trial on
the Camel Hill - Ilchester course.
For the second time in his career he averaged
over 30mph ,clocking 19.53s for a new course
and event record and a personal best by two seconds.
Second placed Geoff Giddings (Delta RT) also
beat the old course record clocking 20.26s, but
had the consolation of seeing his wife, Georgina,
win the ladies prize with an excellent 23.59s.
Salisbury's Lee Paxton was third in 20.50s
with veterans Mark Fodden (Bournemouth
Arrow) on 21.02s and Dave Barnes (Team
Zoyland) on 21.06s close behind. Jim Lowe
(Severn RC) with 21.17s was sixth.
Best improvement
C Harvey (Corinium CC) was fastest junior,
clocking 22.20s, and the best improvement prize
went to tricyclist I Collins (Salisbury), who
recorded 25.44s in slashing 2.05s off his previous
time.
Yeovil CC won the team award led by Jason
Gunney (21.48s), veteran Tony White (22.02s)
and Gareth Evans with a personal 22.11s.
The near perfect conditions ensured a rash of
personals amongst the local riders.
Richard Jeffery (Yeovil) was 1.16s better in
23.47s, Andy Lawrence (Chard) 1.11s up recording 22.25s, Kevin Robins crowning a comeback
season by slicing 51 seconds off his time, clocking 22.31s, and juvenile Andrew Tearle a 45 second improvement to 25.26s.
Brooks continued his winning streak on
Sunday morning in the Heron RC 25 on the A38
at Chudleigh in Devon.
His 54.16s was 1.40s better than Zoyland’s
Barnes and veteran Londoner Paul Bennett was a
further 58 seconds down in third place.
Closer to home, Yeovil's Evans took a creditable sixth place in the Poole Wheelers 25 mile
event,clocking 59.02s behind Salisbury's Paxton
who won with 55.12s, a good time on the difficult Woodbury-Upton-Wareham course.
Pilgrimage
Yeovil's Nick Armstrong and Dave Driver
made their annual pilgrimage to France to ride
the classic Duo Normand team time trial at
Marigny in Normandy on Sunday. .
The event attracted 360 teams from all over
Europe and covered all classes from professionals to family teams.
The Italian amateur team of Colombo and
Contri beat the professional teams and were the
fastest overall, covering the varied 52 kilo course
in 1.6.28s. A Swedish team was second and the
french professional RMO squad third.
The Yeovil pair did very well, taking third
place in the veteran class, returning 1.23.43s, one
and a half minutes behind British winners, exprofessionals, Gino Goddard and John
MacMillan.

holder Pauline Strong, partnered by husband
Alan, won the family team award.
