PATRICK FOLEYS HAM HILL TRIUMPH
ANY doubts about the success of Yeovil
Cycling Clubs early season road races after
a last minute course change, were quickly
dispelled as the riders covered the 18.5
mile laps at a furious pace.
Traffic lights which appeared on Coppits Hill
road works made the change necessary and
detour from Ilchester to Tintinhull - Chilthorne
Domer - Vagg Hill, approaching the Coombe
Street Lane finish from Brimsmore.
The average speed of the senior Ham Hill
Trophy event was around 27 mph for the 55
miles.
Heron Road Clubs Patrick Foley made the
winning move on the last climb of Vagg,
attacking again as the four man break he was
with were caught by the bunch. He had ten
seconds in hand at the finish where Malcolm
Steer (Wellington Wheelers) pip ed Paul Panton
(VC St Raphael) on the line to tie second place.
Kevin Squibb (Tiverton CS) was fourth, Timmy
Jones (IPM Racing) fifth and Bristol Road Club’s
Steve Thomas sixth. VC St Raphael took the
team award.
The Pittard Trophy race enjoyed sponsorship
from the local leather company and sixty riders
competed for £250 in prizes.
The feature of the race was a four man break
which went away with ten of the 37 miles
covered and worked well together, maintaining a
lead of over two minutes at one time. Swindon’s
Andrew Morgan worked hard in the break but
tired in the closing stages and was caught,
leaving just three riders to contest the tool
placings.
Rob Lyne powered away from the others in
the sprint to give Heron Road Club a clean
sweep. Alan Williams from Cwncarn Paragon
was second and Bristol Road Clubs Daniel
Moore third and best junior.
Jonathan Hunt won the bunch sprint for
fourth place and led Mid Devon RC to the team
award. Ian Humble (Gloucester City) and James
Powley (IPM Racing) were fifth and sixth.
Yeovils Patrick Mahon and Gareth Evans
were well up with the bunch and veteran Nick
Armstrong just behind after losing contact on
Vagg Hill.

Thruxton where Yeovil CCs Bill Dycer clocked

Beckington, saw Brooks average 25 mph to clock
1.11.50. Somer Valleys Richard Simmonds was
second in 1.12.54 and the promoting clubs Bob
Pears third with 1.13.00.
