John's Funeral - Wednesday 11 October at 10am

Fri 6th October 2023

John's funeral is this coming Wednesday, 11 October, at 10am. Marilyn has said that all those who knew John and wished to pay their respects are most welcome. As far as we know the plan remains for us to meet the cortege somewhere in Somerton and follow John to the burial ground at Westcombe, a distance of about a mile. We have also been asked if we could provide a guard of honour with a line-up of cyclists and, I think, bikes. Marilyn will send us more details over the weekend.

John's Funeral more information from Marius.

The family are keen for us to take an active part in the proceedings. Firstly, this will involve meeting the cortege in Somerton and following it to the Westcombe Burial Ground on our bikes, in club kit (if you have it, don't worry if you don't). I have agreed with the Funeral Director that we will wait beside the entrance to the Somerton Sports Ground/Rugby Club, Langport Road, B3153, what3words///mops.drain.latitudes. There is adequate parking for those wishing to drive and then get on their bikes. we need to be ready to depart from Somerton Sports Ground with the cortege at 0930, so individual arrival times at Somerton need to be adjusted accordingly. Those who wish could meet up at Palmer's and cycle in as a group. Departure time at Palmer's 08:15

When we arrive with the cortege we need to go straight into the field with our bikes and form two lines 10ft apart between the field entrance and the graveside. There will hopefully be a line on the ground showing where the corridor should be. The other mourners will be waiting at the entrance to the field to follow John’s coffin. It will take a few minutes for the bearers to lift John from the hearse and transport him to his final resting place. These few minutes should give us enough time to collect a flyer from the celebrant regarding the ceremony, and form the honour guard with our bikes. The ceremony is about 40 minutes so be prepared to stand or sit on the grass. Finally, we have been invited to the wake at Westlands. More information later.
